The Shadow of Fear
Have you ever been so afraid of something that it held you back from truly living your life authentically and at your full potential? A long time ago, I finally decided that fear was not going to run my life anymore.
Fear had long been my companion, keeping me from meeting new people, trying new experiences, living my life the way I dreamt about, and even riding a bike. Every time I faced a fear, a voice inside me whispered failure and doubt, former disappointments, or past lasting misfortunes. Riding a bike was no exception.
Embarking on the Biking Journey
Determined to conquer my fears, I started small, stepping out of my comfort zones one challenge at a time. I conquered fears of closed spaces, met new people, put myself in previously unendurable situations, drove a car, and traveled to places I never imagined I could. Even tiny rooms I once dreaded became bearable. But learning to ride a bike remained on my bucket list, calling me out of my comfort with a mix of dread and excitement. I dreamed about being able to ride a bike with my significant other without any fear or doubt.
So I registered for a biking course in Nuremberg, despite the inner voice insisting it wasn't an activity I could ever perform. "You aren't stable on your feet yet, how do you expect to be stable on a bike?" the voice nagged. "You'll make an accident! It's dangerous!" "You've tried so many times and failed!" However, another voice emerged, encouraging me: "You will do this! You can do anything you put your mind and heart to. You already know this. Likewise, you rode as a kid. It's just a muscle reminder."
The Turning Point
The first two lessons were less than encouraging to me. I was full of doubts, unsure on the bike, always thinking negative thoughts about me doing this. At my third lesson, though, everything changed. The mother of a teenager brought her son to the class and unknowingly gave me life-changing advice: "The secret is just to look ahead of you, not on the wheel."
Suddenly, everything clicked. I learned to ride confidently, looking ahead, embracing the freedom and balance I found.
A Metaphor for Life
Conquering biking was not just a physical skill, but an important metaphor for overcoming challenges on the path to conquering a dream. How often do we focus on the obstacles right under us, instead of the road ahead? Life, like biking, becomes stable when we shift our gaze to what's ahead.
Looking Ahead
This was a simple, yet such a profound truth that applies to more than just biking; it applies to any fear or challenge we face.
If fear is holding you back, as it did to me, remember to look ahead. I still remind myself this any time I hear that voice again that makes me doubt I can.
When you lose your balance, get on the bike again and find your stability through looking ahead, not at the wheel.
Have you ever experienced a turning point in life that shifted it forever? Sometimes is just a phrase, a word, a look or a piece of art that seems so insignificant to others but might be so significant to us! I'd love to hear your story! Share it without doubts or hesitation in the comments below!
