A Milestone in My Artistic Journey
Have you ever had experiences as an artist that you know will stay with you forever? Experiences that warm your heart whenever you think of them and motivate you when you feel tired?
Last year, I encountered such a moment. It marked a pivotal milestone in my artistic journey—my first ever exhibition, a vernissage I had never envisioned undertaking. For over four years, art had been my cherished hobby. This was the first year I completed my art program and dared to identify myself as a professional artist, not merely a hobbyist or occasional painter.
With a cohesive portfolio, I began applying to exhibitions. To my delight, I was accepted to exhibit at a local winery, a venue I was thrilled about.
Exhibition Day: From Doubts to Delight
When I applied, my goal was simple: to share my art with the world, moving it out of my studio and into the light. Despite promoting the event extensively to friends, acquaintances, and on social media, a lingering question haunted my mind: "Who am I, really?" As an emerging artist with an unknown name, I tempered my expectations, especially on a rainy holiday when many would likely stay at home, cozy in their beds or on their sofas.
To my amazement, the opening evening was bustling with visitors. Many were foreigners who paused at my paintings, lingering and engaging in discussions, their gazes locked with my work. Watching from afar, I hesitated to approach them, fearful of interrupting their connection or confronting questions I wasn't yet ready to articulate. Back then, speaking about my art was challenging; expressing its essence was an even steeper hill to climb. It still is, but I continue to improve.
An Unexpected Sale: "The Girl and the Dog"
As the evening drew to a close, I accepted that none of my pieces had sold, yet I was content. I had achieved my goal of sharing my art. Unexpectedly, ten minutes before closing, a man approached me, expressing interest in purchasing a painting he described as "the girl and the dog." Confused, as I had never painted such a scene, I asked him to show me the piece.
To my surprise, it was a painting of a woman and a wolf, facing each other. Intrigued, I listened as he explained, "When I see this painting, I see my daughter, who loves dogs." When I asked the age of his daughter, he smiled and said, "Two." His words were a revelation—the first time I realized art needn't always explicitly explained.
Art's Journey Beyond the Canvas
Art's true essence comes to light through the eyes of its beholder. As artists, we may create without fully comprehending the deeper connections our works will evoke. His story taught me that a painting creates its own narrative and destiny with its audience.
We agreed that I would deliver the painting to his home the next day. Meeting his young daughter and seeing where my work would reside filled me with awe. The painting might remain there for a short time or forever, becoming a cherished memory for the girl as she grows. I was honored to witness the potential of my art transforming into a symbol—a talisman from a father to his beloved daughter.
A New Understanding of Art
This experience taught me the profound truth that art, once released into the world, embarks on its own journey, forging bonds and leaving lasting impressions in unexpected ways.
As I continue on my path, this memory serves as a constant reminder of the magic inherent in art and its ability to speak the language of the heart—inspiring not only those who view it, but also the artist who creates it.
Whether at the beginning of my journey or much further along, this tale will forever be a beacon of possibility and connection, encouraging me to keep creating and sharing my vision with the world.
