Crafting Time: How to Prioritize Your Creative Passion
For over eight years, art has been an integral part of my life. It started as a humble hobby—an evening ritual after work, where I would retreat to my cozy corner in the bedroom to indulge in paper quilling.
As my creative journey expanded, I began experimenting with drawing and various paint materials. Despite my passion, a persistent frustration lingered: there never seemed to be enough time to create.
Understanding Obstacles
We lead busy lives, wearing many hats—parent, worker, colleague, family member—and often, "artist" falls last on the list. We mistakenly view art as a luxury to pursue only after fulfilling all other duties. However, prioritizing our soul's endeavors is crucial. We can't be truly happy as partners, siblings, or parents unless we first nurture our own passions.
Commitment to Creativity
Prioritizing creativity requires intentional effort. Setting aside specific times each day for art-making transformed my practice. Embracing small, consistent actions, rather than waiting for perfect moments, helped maintain momentum and fostered deeper commitment. It could be one or two hours after work, or even two hours before—rising earlier than anyone else. The key is to intentionally carve out time for your art; time is a slippery, elusive element.
Being a Part of a Supportive Community
Connections with other creatives can profoundly influence our commitment. Engaging with like-minded individuals, whether online or locally, provides encouragement and accountability. Discovering a vibrant community can reignite your passion and drive.
Creating a Routine
Establishing a creative routine tailored to your lifestyle is essential. I dedicate time in my studio daily from 7 to 11, allowing no interruptions during this sacred block. If some spare time remains in the evening, I don't hesitate to invest it in creating. It's important that those around you recognize your seriousness. Start with short sessions and gradually increase their duration. If you take your creativity seriously, others will too.
Embracing Imperfection
Perfectionism can stifle creativity; instead, embrace the process and its imperfections. One of my experiences taught me this valuable lesson: the joy lies in the journey, not just the result. Let your artistic explorations be opportunities for growth and self-expression.
Making regular time for art not only sustains your creativity but also enriches your life in countless ways. Dedicating yourself to your creative passion invites joy, balance, and fulfillment into your daily routine. Take that first step today, and watch how the canvas of your life transforms. Make time for your soul!
